Event Description:
The top twenty winning images from 2012's Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition will be on display at the Science Factory Children's Museum & Exploration Dome as part of a national tour from February 16 through March 30. The Museum's participation in the tour is made possible by Pacific Office Automation. As the leading forum for presenting the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the light microscope, Nikon Small World awards the world's best photomicrographers who create spectacular imagery while simultaneously showcasing phenomena from a diverse range of advanced scientific disciplines. In its 38th year, this annual competition honors top photomicrographers from around the world - some of whom have won multiple times. Winning images were chosen by a panel of judges based on their originality, information content, technical competency and artistic impact. The twenty prize-winning images are exhibited at museums and science centers throughout the United States and Canada, and the Science Factory is the only 1st place photo of "the blood brain barrier in a live zebrafish embryo" museum in Oregon to host the exhibit in 2013. This year's top honors went to Dr. Jennifer Peters and Dr. Michael Taylor of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for their submission of "the blood brain barrier in a live zebrafish embryo" magnified twenty times, that is believed to be the first-ever image showing the formation of the blood-brain barrier in a live animal. First place winners Peters and Taylor used confocal microscopy to capture the barrier, a technique that allows the reconstruction of three-dimensional structures. Their images were stacked and compressed into one image, and given rainbow coloring to emphasize depth. Second and third place winners include Walter Piorkoski's depiction of "live newborn lynx spiderlings" magnified six times, and Dr. Dylan Burnette's colorful photograph of "human bone cancer (osteosarcoma) showing actin filaments (purple), mitochondria (yellow), and DNA (blue)" magnified 63 times, respectively. A few of the visually stunning images are Dr. Kenneth Libbrecht's photo, awarded an honorable mention, of a snow crystal illuminated with colored lights (magnified five times), Dr. Kenneth Libbrecht's snow crystal (not on display) and Stefan Eberhard's "image of distinction" of colorful caffeine crystals (magnified 25 times). The Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition is open to anyone with an interest in photography, and the deadline for 2013 entries is April 30. More information and images from the last 38 years of the competition can be found at www.nikonsmallworld.com. The Nikon Small World Exhibit can be viewed at the Science Factory from February 16 through March 30. Exhibit Hall admission is $4 for visitors ages 3 to 62, $3 for seniors over 62, and free for Science Factory members. The Exhibit Hall is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
